The 13 Colonies Project
Project timeline:
- Research and take notes on your colony.
- Complete research, finish your bibliography, & begin putting your info into Google Slides or Canva.
- Create a video advertising why people should move to your colony.
Part 1 ~ Research Checklist
Use the research sources below to gather information about your colony. You are looking for the following information:
- Reason colony was founded. Founder's Name and Circumstances. When was it founded? Why was it founded?
- Economy. What goods did it produce? What cash crops? What were the common or typical occupations? Role of slavery?
- Geography. Which region is it located in? What are its land features, climate, and waterways? How did your colonists interact with the environment?
- Cultural: Religious and Social. What religion did your colony practice? What was your daily life like? How does this colony compare to "Old Country?'
- Political/Government. What type of government did yours have (proprietary, royal charter, or joint stock, etc)? Name two significant historical events in your colony before 1755.
Keep up with your note sheets because you will need to use them to make your bibliography. Fill them out completely.
Research Sources:
Source #1 - Explore the following source for information on your colony. Be sure to cite articles you take notes from on your bibliography.
Britannica Online Encyclopedia
Type in the name of your colony. Information on the state should appear and you will need to read its history.
Source #2 - Search for a QUALITY resource to complete your research.
What information do you still need to find? Search for a quality website or use a book from the media center collection.

PART 2 ~ Type your notes and create your Bibliography
In Google Docs, create your bibliography giving credit to your sources.

Create a Canva poster or Google Slides to present your information in a clear, easy-to-follow format.

Part 3 ~ Infomercial
You will create an infomercial for your colony. In your infomercial you are trying to persuade people to move to your colony. You should use the information from your poster to make your colony appealing to others in Europe. In your video include the following:
Your video should be at least 30 seconds in length and no more than 2 minutes. All information should be accurate and reflect the date of the advertisement. Use props and other digital tools to enhance your video.
You will create an infomercial for your colony. In your infomercial you are trying to persuade people to move to your colony. You should use the information from your poster to make your colony appealing to others in Europe. In your video include the following:
- What types of employment opportunities does your colony offer?
- What geographic features make your colony appealing to people back in Europe?
- What social opportunities are available? (Government and Religion)
- What separates your colony from the others?
Your video should be at least 30 seconds in length and no more than 2 minutes. All information should be accurate and reflect the date of the advertisement. Use props and other digital tools to enhance your video.
